Edinburgh anchors our 2026 trip to Scotland.
We took four days to explore the capital of Scotland and enjoy a city both Michael and I had visited before. But my memory is that of an eight-year old who remembers watching his first snowfall there in 1956 and being disappointed that it appeared more gray than white in those days of coal-fired smog. Michael became the tour leader because his experiences here were much more current.
Edinburgh Castle sits on its volcanic hill looking impregnable and impervious.
The University of Edinburgh School of Divinity is just steps away from the Castle on a steep cobbled climb. A student there assured us that the approach to classes is very slippery in the winter and requires caution.
The Royal Mile's stone pavement runs downhill with both impressive town houses and older tenements.
We climbed up Arthur's Seat through hills of gorse and past a solitary piper playing for contributions.
The philosopher David Hume lived and died in Edinburgh.
