Day 1 of 2 — Glenbeigh to Caherciveen
This day like the next provided a wealth of grand views. We began walking out of Glenbeigh to the southwest, climbing the sides of hills that would eventually bring us high above Dingle Bay with the Ring of Kerry road and an abandoned railway line far below us.
We followed our detailed Hillwalk Tours route descriptions through fields, along country roads and over boglands until we reached a Gaelic Football Field where we waited for a ride into town from our host at San Antoine B&B in Caherciveen. Tourist activities in the town are limited but we walked down to the shore, admired the tide receding into the sunset and inspected the outsides of the Daniel O'Connell History Museum and the Daniel O'Connell Church, both named for the most famous local son.
Day 2 of 2 — Caherciveen to Waterville
We took another car ride out of town to bring us up to Coars Cross. The initial climb up the hillside was the steepest of the day but it lifted our trail above the cultivated lands and the busy wind turbines onto the ridge tops and gave us sunny sweeping views of southern Kerry. In order to cross the numerous fences and walls in this land of farms and pastures, the trail builders have constructed tall wooden stiles over the barriers.
Ancient peoples occupied this land, leaving their standing stones to mark our way. The careful farmers have used them to support their electric fencing!
I stopped to admire the bog cotton, which is as common to the Irish landscape as gorse. Our path wandered up and down but gradually brought us closer to Waterville.
