Kilkenny and return to Dublin 2023

Looking up the River Nore towards Kilkenny Castle

The River Suir is navigable up to Waterford City whereas the River Nore is pretty but narrow as it runs through Kilkenny.

The train tracks leaving Waterford City follow the Suir. A pedestrian walk accompanies the Nore.

After checking into our room above the bar at JBs Bar & Guest Accommodation, we walked along the Nore and through a wide city park to visit Kilkenny Castle. It has been renovated to display ornate rooms and impressive picture galleries.

Vast picture galleries inside match vast ornamental gardens outside.

The Medieval Mile extends through the center of Kilkenny from the Castle to St. Canice's Cathedral. We walked through many alleys along the way, stopping at the Medieval Mile Museum where we found some excellent Celtic stone crosses on the way to the Kilkenny round tower.

St. Canice's Cathedral has an unusual mixture of rough stonework and beautiful Gothic cut stone columns.
The Black Abbey is even more decorated and gold encrusted but it also has sections of rough stonework in side chapels.

On the morning we took the train back to Dublin to catch our plane home, we walked downtown under an overcast sky to find some breakfast because JBs does not do B&B.

It was our first and only rainy day in Ireland during our 2023 trip.
