Harris

A Bicycle Trip to the Isle of Harris

Harris has more mountains and sandy beaches than Lewis and lots of wind and rain. We rode our hired bicycles 36 miles from Stornoway to Tarbert.

We bused to Leverburgh along the scenic west coast with its famous sandy beaches and then walked 8 miles through blustery rain squalls to visit St. Clements Church in Rodel on the southern tip of Harris.

St. Clements Church

I remembered my visit in 1966 when I was somewhat taken aback by the image on the church wall of a very naked lady, but the Sheela-na-gig is so worn down now that one needs a strong imagination to be scandalized today.

Our 36 mile ride back to Stornoway passed many bog ponds and rocky fields but only one shop.
